4WD Vehicle & Driver Training

The Goal ~ Gaining well-grounded confidence in using your vehicle beyond where the road stops.

Overlanding often includes roads that require 4WDriving. Being confident in the 4WD system of your vehicle is key to having peace of mind that you can deal with the unexpected.

Our training is aimed at each client becoming confident in using their own vehicle in off road situations regardless of their experience. We start off from where the clients are, breaking the fundamentals down for everyone to understand.

How it happens:

We'll meet up at a pre-determined location, starting the day with a coffee and orientation around the planned training for the day. We'll then make our way to the location and start with the modules.

Some modules can be handled on a loose surface and by moving around the vehicle, then we won't be driving on a 4WD track. However, certain modules are meant to be done in real 4WD conditions, where we will then drive onto the chosen track for the day.

Where it takes place              : Cape Town

How Long                              : half to full day depending on planned training

Overland Training

The Goal ~ Preparation with a plan of action reduces anxiety for  the unwished events. Knowledge removes fear.

Remote vehicle-based travel is the core of Overlanding. These modules are built around this concept, where we share the knowledge and hands-on experiences that we've consolidated. When we do these training sessions, we focus on the small things that people often forget to consider.

Overlanding is a broad activity and each person has their own way of embracing it. As a result, we also provide training that is unique and specific to each client. If a specific subject is something that you need more clarity on, we'll structure the training for this to make sure that your needs are met as good as possible. If these specific subjects are contained within existing modules, we'll advise accordingly. And if it doesn't or if it's a small part of it, we'll set out the time to focus on it. This might be subjects such as navigation, working with tools around the vehicle, using two-way radios, etc.

Training In Motion

The Goal ~ Empowering our clients with confidence to head out on their own solo adventures in Africa. Real-life learning as the adventure unfolds.

As the name suggests, this is training in real-life situations. We join you with our vehicle and all our own kit. You'll have your vehicle with your own kit. Together we'll head out on a pre-planned route over a number of days on a real Overland trip. This is "baptism by fire" training, the most adventurous and rewarding. As with most adventure pastimes, learning the ropes as the real thing unfolds provides invaluable experience.

We plan the trip to incorporate scenarios relating to as many of the 4WD and Overland training modules as possible, dealing with the situations as they unfold on the travels in front of us. Ideally, we will spend more than one day at certain locations, driving less but having more time to do the training around the vehicle and gear.

Where it takes place              : 2-3 hours from Cape Town

How Long                   : minimum of 3 days, but is dependent on each clients’ needs

Each day's learnings will be recapped in the evening, experiences gained and lessons learned.

  • ·      planning the route or driving for the day (to the next campsite or onto the 4x4 track)

    ·      spending time on the planned modules for the day (sometimes we'll create a scenario or lay everything needed out on the table)

    ·      driving on the route or track and the activities relating to it, i.e. managing tire pressures, using the recovery gear

    ·      preparing meals

    ·      using and testing all the gear in and around your vehicle

    ·      answering any specific questions regarding Overlanding that you might have

  • Many Overlanding activities will be done first-hand. Instead of doing it for you, we'll be there to help you use your gear yourself. We'll do it together. Some of these activities are:

    • Navigation

    • Water habits while traveling

    • Filling up with fuel

    • Becoming confident with your 12V while traveling

    • Shopping in rural areas

    • Switching between 2- and 4-wheel drive, high and low range as we travel over varying terrain

    • Dealing with minor vehicle-related issues like bolts that loosened or connections that rattled loose

    • Setting up camp

    • Using all the overlanding gear that has been fitted to your vehicle

Many questions arise as you go through the hands-on motions of driving, setting up camp, preparing meals, etc. (general Overlanding activities). We'll be at hand to answer and discuss any questions or topics that may arise.
